Potable Water System Master Planning and Implementation
City of Chubbuck, Idaho

OVERVIEW
Keller Associates has provided master planning, design and consulting services for the City of Chubbuck’s potable water system for many years. These projects have involved the development of potable water wells; design of post-tensioned concrete storage reservoirs; creation of a new upper pressure zone; and implementation of water treatment facilities and major water transmission pipelines.

CHALLENGE
As the City of Chubbuck has grown, the demand for potable water supply, storage, and good quality water has become a significant challenge. The City’s water supply consisted of three wells, two of which were contaminated with PERC at levels above safe drinking water limits. Also, as growth has spread up the bench area to the east and toward the ground level reservoirs, bench area pressures during high summer use periods typically dropped below standards.

SOLUTION
Faced with the possibility of taking two of the major water supply wells offline because of PERC contamination, and dealing with low pressures in the east bench area plus an overtaxed water supply system, the City authorized Keller Associates to proceed with implementation of master planning, concept development, and implementation of potable water system upgrades to resolve these problems. One contaminated 2,500 gpm well was retrofitted with an air stripping tower and a variable frequency drive booster pumping facility. In addition, a new 3,500 gpm well facility and major transmission lines were implemented to provide additional water supply, thus allowing the City to remove the remaining PERC-contaminated well from the system. The east bench area pressure problems were resolved by the design and construction of a new 4,500-gpm booster pumping facility and the creation of new upper pressure zone. All of the potable water system facilities are now controlled by a SCADA control system that provides control and monitoring of the well pumps, air stripping facilities, booster pumps, and reservoirs.
