Franklin Road Widening
Ada County Highway District

OVERVIEW
The project consisted of widening about 1.5 miles of rural Franklin Road from Benjamin Lane to Five Mile Road in Boise, Idaho.

CHALLENGE
Increasing capacity was the primary goal given the tremendous increase of traffic volumes associated with commercial development near the Boise Towne Square Mall off the I-84 interchange at Franklin Road. Widening the road would prove challenging since existing grades varied considerably on the north and south side of the roadway.

SOLUTION
The design incorporated a new five lane section with additional turn lanes at major intersections. Two fully signalized seven lane intersections were designed to improve operations. Traffic engineering included channelization, striping, signing, and illumination. To address grade concerns, the vertical profile was optimized at intersections and access locations. Different measures to minimize right-of-way included the use of concrete slope paving and reinforced earth retaining walls along segments of the corridor. Two bridges were designed and built over canals.
