Weiser Downtown Revitalization
City of Weezer, Idaho

OVERVIEW
The City of Weiser embarked on an ambitious downtown revitalization plan to boost the economy, improve the physical appearance, and attract business to the heart of downtown Weiser. The project included many elements of which the main portion included the full reconstruction of 6.5 downtown blocks. Other elements included the historic depot restoration, creation and development of Veterans Park, site design for the new Vendome Events Center, and extending State Street improvements further north.

 

CHALLENGE
Securing funding to plan, design, and build the project was a huge challenge by itself. Planning and designing an attractive and functional project within budget limitations was critical. Impacts to downtown businesses during construction was a real concern, especially given the depth and breadth of the reconstruction.

SOLUTION
Keller Associates led the public involvement and outreach program working closely with City representatives and active downtown business owners. The team was proactive in the community building support by sponsoring numerous public meetings, giving presentations to community organizations and groups, and talking directly with downtown merchants. Overall, seven different funding sources were secured for the project along with overwhelming public support. Keller Associates produced quality design drawings with special emphasis to detail and provided construction engineering, management, and inspection. To mitigate impacts to business during construction, measures were implemented to coordinate contractor activities with merchants on a weekly basis. Business advertising increased during construction to let customers know that businesses were open and accessible.
