Ada County Highway District Bridges
Ada County Highway District

OVERVIEW
Over the past several years, Keller Associates has provided design and construction support on about 20 different single span bridge projects throughout Ada County, Idaho. Design projects have ranged from full bridge replacement to innovative rehabilitation measures to extend bridge life. All bridges were associated with waterways, drainages, or canals.

CHALLENGE
Although each project is different, several recurring issues emerged. Challenges were associated with determining the best bridge type for the project, construction traffic control during bridge construction, hydraulics of waterways, wetland impacts and permitting, water quality concerns and storm water treatment, canal company and irrigation district coordination, and addressing roadway approach improvements along with safety and guardrail at the bridge ends.

SOLUTION
Projects began with analysis of bridge types to select the most economical and practical solution. Some projects allowed road closure where reasonable detours were available while others required staged construction. We focused on close coordination with canal companies, irrigation districts, and regulatory agencies, so necessary approvals were granted during the design process. Quality and attention to detail were built into the design and preparation of our plans and specifications. Effective best management practices were designed to address water quality concerns.
